LexisNexis Statistical DataSets: a Research Solution Tool
Introducing LexisNexis Statistical DataSets... Coming Soon to a Library Near You!
LexisNexis Statistical DataSets is the newest addition to the area of Academic & Library Solutions. Linked through the LexisNexis Statistical platform or as a stand-alone product, our new LexisNexis Statistical DataSets interface makes it easy to access and analyze Federal Government and commercial statistical datasets.
LexisNexis Statistical DataSets aggregates hundreds of public domain datasets and several proprietary datafiles and makes that data available from within a single interface, enabling users to combine multiple datasets and customize tables and charts for themselves. Users scan the contents of these datasets, select subjects and variables of interest, and view the data in side-by-side tables and charts.
- Customizable: The interface components work in sync with each other to allow users to build their own table and/or chart from the statistical datasets they are interested in.
- Interactive: The interface is interactive, versatile, and easy to use. In its default mode, LexisNexis Statistical DataSets shows a table with an accompanying trend-chart on a single topic (e.g. total U.S. population). By holding down the control key, users can add more subjects to the chart and table (e.g. black population or persons over 65) illustrating how trends for these particular groups compare to national totals.
- Instant Results: Users just need to click on the topic they are interested in, and the data instantly displays in the Data Display panel.
- Accurate Results: The data are reviewed and validated by teams of data analysts who consult with the content providers whenever discrepancies or anomalies are found.
- Comprehensive Sources and DataSets: Users can compare datasets from numerous sources, both public and proprietary, and data are the most recently available data. Most data is loaded within minutes of public release.
- Statistical Correlation Made Easy: Because LexisNexis Statistical DataSets makes data from many sources available within a single interface, users can select two or more variables and view them in relation to one another, a correlation capability not found in other products.
- Analytical tools: The software also permits some basic statistical analysis of the results. Students can use the Calculator tool or select a Statistical Analysis function to create a new column of data in a table and display the results graphically.
- Output Options: Users can print data in any of several display modes; download data in Excel or comma-delimited format; output to a PDF; or copy/paste into another application.
- Search: LexisNexis Statistical DataSets provides a very powerful tool for searching all the text data in the product. This helps users to find the datasets they need, and the interface adjusts to the user's selection.
- Bibliographic Information: The product includes a tool that both creates citation records in any of three formats, and also provides information about each source, dataset, and indicator. Students and researchers can use the tool to facilitate citing the tables they create for their papers and other research, and can easily see definitions and other notes about the data.
LexisNexis Statistical DataSets Interface
How does LexisNexis Statistical DataSets interface work?
- Users select indicators from folders along the left panel (Indicator Panel).
- Users select variables from the top panel (Criteria Panel) for each of the indicators. Options include dates, demographic breakdowns, geographic areas, industries, companies, and other elements, depending on the indicator(s) selected.
- Every mouse click instantly changes the data shown in the Data Display area. By clicking on the icons at the top, users can change display from a Trend line to a Map or a bar chart Ranking individual entities. Additional display and output options are listed in the pull-down menus above the display area.
Comparative Analysis: The product makes it easy to compare two or more indicators or geographic areas. You simply hold down the control and click on the item(s) you wish to compare, and the values display in the table and graph. Comparisons can be made within and across datasets.
Calculator tool: The service includes a calculator tool that allows users to analyze multiple indicators. For instance, a user could calculate a vehicle theft rate based on number of the vehicle thefts as a percent of all registered vehicles.....
A new column based on the user's calculations then appears. Click the checkboxes above the table to control what displays in the chart or table.
By clicking on the blue "i" button next to the indicator heading, users can access definitions and other information about the source, dataset, and indicator.
